Twelve years and more than 150 million sold units later, Sony’s decided the Playstation 2 has done all it can do. The Guardian revealed company confirmation of the end of global manufacturing for the PS2. The writing was on the wall on New Year’s Day with the announcement production would end in Japan, but I doubt anyone expected it to come this quickly.
Obviously, this is way bigger than when the Gamecube and XBox were discontinued because let’s face it, no one liked those consoles anyway. (My family had both. Go figure.) Great games came out for both systems–Resident Evil 4 and Halo immediately come to mind–yet there’s no denying the PS2 was king. Name an important game from the last 20 years and most of them likely graced that big black brick. Metal Gear Sold 2 and 3, Grand Theft Auto 3 and its sequels Vice City and San Andreas, Ico, Okami, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Persona 3 and 4, Gran Turismo, Tekken 3, 4, and 5, Final Fantasy X, Sly Cooper, God of War, Guitar Hero, Katamari Damacy…the list can go on and on. It’s truly amazing. There are rumblings that it ties with the Super Nintendo as the best console of all time. I have to agree.
Good night, sweet prince.
